Without doubt the UFO phenomenon was the greatest and most bizarre mystery of
the
twentieth century.
Millions of people from all parts of the world
reported sightings and experiences and millions more were captivated by the
subject.
In truth, no-one really knew exactly what the
UFO phenomenon represented,
but the most popular
interpretation was that alien beings were visiting Earth. Sightings of lights
in the sky, strange flying discs, and even sinister accounts of alien
abductions, all fed a ripe collective imagination towards the belief that we
were not alone in the universe.
UFO's became one of the most controversial
topics during the
latter half of the century,
not least because many believed that
governments knew the truth and refused to inform the public of what they knew.
An
entire catalogue of theories emerged regarding the UFO phenomenon, ranging from
the simple notion that extra-terrestrial beings were travelling across the
universe to Earth, to more complex psychological theories that implied that
UFO's were a part of a bizarre human phenomenon.
But whatever UFO's were, the phenomenon itself
was very real.
